American movie actor and Academy Award nominee Steve McQueen (1930 – 1980). Nicknamed  ’The King of Cool’ McQueen starred in 34 films including The Magnificent Seven, The Great Escape, The Thomas Crown Affair, Le Mans, Papillon, The Getaway, Towering Inferno, Bullit. Terry O’Neill took this photograph of McQueen at his office in Hollywood in 1979 months before his death in 1980. McQueen had a fascinating background by serving time in the military forces (saving several lives) and a serious interest in dirt biking (hence his amazing stunts in The Great Escape) and motor racing as well as a martial arts expert. Born in Beech Grove, Idiana, USA, in 1974 he was the highes paid movie star in the world being so much in demand due to his popularity and high demand.

He turned down countless roles in top movies for a variety of reasons. Just before his death in an interview with medics he put down his illness to the handling of asbestos while serving time in the US Marine Corps.
